There's a word in Portuguese that has no English translation. Saudade — somewhere between longing and memory, the ache of something beautiful that hasn't ended yet. For one evening, we're turning Battery Park into a Lisbon wine bar: live gypsy jazz as you settle in with your first glass, a curated Portuguese pairing, and at the center of the night a short set of fado, the soulful, UNESCO-recognized music that turns a room of strangers into something quieter and closer.
You don't need to know anything about fado. You just need to show up with a glass in your hand. The room only holds 50, and this one won't repeat the same way twice.
Three Movements
Acoustic gypsy jazz and bossa nova, warm and unhurried. A café in the Alfama district on a summer evening.
The room quiets. A short, powerful set of fado with a brief introduction to the tradition and to saudade. The part everyone talks about afterward.
Django Reinhardt standards and French café swing. The energy lifts, the wine keeps flowing, the night opens back up.

Gypsy Reverie
Gypsy Reverie is an acoustic ensemble rooted in the 1930s Django Reinhardt tradition — gypsy jazz, fado, and global café music played with a ferocious, elegant intensity you won't find anywhere else in Asheville. They've drawn full houses at City Winery and the Avalon Theater, and the fado set is something no other band in town performs.
